May and Might का प्रयोग – अब तक हमने Can और Could को समझ लिया है। अब मैं आपको ये बताना चाहूँगा कि May और Might दोनों का use भी “सकता” के sense में ही होता है।

मैं शाम को फिल्म देखने जा सकता हूँ। (Possibility)
(Main shaam ko film dekhne ja sakta hoon.)
I can/could/may/might go to watch a movie in the evening.
मैं रोज़ 5 किलोमीटर दौड़ सकता हूँ। (Ability in Present)
(Main roz 5 kms daud sakta hoon.)
I can run 5 kms every day./ I am able to run 5 kms every day.
पिछले साल, मैं रोज़ 5 किलोमीटर दौड़ सकता था।(Ability in Past)
(Pichle saal, main roz 5 kms daud sakta tha.)
Last year, I could run 5 kms every day./
Last year, I was able to run 5 kms every day.
वो मेरे घर आ सकता था पर आया नहीं। (Possibility in past)
(Vo mere ghar aa sakta tha par aaya nahi.)
He could have come to my house but he didn’t./
He may have come to my house but he didn’t./
He might have come to my house but he didn’t.
क्या मैं आपसे 2 मिनट बात कर सकता हूँ? (Request)
(Kya main aapse 2 minute baat kar sakta hoon?)
Can I talk to you for 2 minutes?/
Could I talk to you for 2 minutes?/
May I talk to you for 2 minutes?/
Might I talk to you for 2 minutes?
अब, आप घर जा सकते हैं। (Permission)
(Ab, aap ghar ja sakte hain.)
Now, you can go home./
Now, you could go home./
Now, you may go home./
Now, you might go home.
अगर मेरे पास पैसे होते, तो मैं भी लैपटॉप खरीद सकता था। (Hypothetical)
(Agar mere paas paise hote, to main bhi laptop kharid sakta tha.)
If I had money, I could have bought a laptop too./
If I had money, I may have bought a laptop too./
If I had money, I might have bought a laptop too.
अगर आपने मेहनत की होती, तो आप इग्ज़ैम पास कर सकते थे। (Hypothetical)
(Agar aapne mehnat ki hoti, to aap exam pass kar sakte the.)
If you had worked hard, you could have passed the exam./
If you had worked hard, you may have passed the exam./
If you had worked hard, you might have passed the exam.
काश वो हमारे साथ खेल पाता। (Wish)
(Kaash vo hamare sath khel pata.)
I wish he could play with us.
उसे अगले साल मुंबई भेजा जा सकता है।
(Use agle saal Mumbai bheja ja sakta hai.)
He can be sent to Mumbai next year. /
He could be sent to Mumbai next year. /
He may be sent to Mumbai next year. /
He might be sent to Mumbai next year.
हम उस दिन एक-दूसरे की मदद कर सकते थे।
(Hum us din ek doosre kee madad kar sakte the.)
We could have helped each other that day. /
We may have helped each other that day. /
We might have helped each other that day.

हमें अगले महीने दिल्ली जाना पड़ सकता है।
(Hume agle mahine Delhi jana pad sakta hai.)
We can have to go to Delhi next month. /
We could have to go to Delhi next month. /
We may have to go to Delhi next month. /
We might have to go to Delhi next month.
आज उसके पास एक बड़ा घर हो सकता था, लेकिन उसने मेहनत नहीं की। (Hypothetical)
(Aaj uske pass ek bada ghar ho sakta tha, lekin usne mehnat nahi kee.)
Today, he could have had a big house, but he didn’t work hard. /
Today, he may have had a big house, but he didn’t work hard. /
Today, he might have had a big house, but he didn’t work hard.
हमें पिछले महीने दिल्ली जाना पड़ सकता था। (Possibility)
(Hume pichle mahine Delhi jana pad sakta tha.)
We could have had to go to Delhi last month./
We may have had to go to Delhi last month./
We might have had to go to Delhi last month.
आपको उससे मिलना पड़ जाता।
(Aapko usse milna pad jata.)
You could have had to meet him. /
You may have had to meet him./
You might have had to meet him.
उसके पास अगले साल एक कार हो सकती है। (Possibility)
(Uske paas agle saal ek car ho sakti hai.)
He can have a car next year. /
He could have a car next year./
He may have a car next year./
He might have a car next year.
वो इस वक्त स्कूल में हो सकती है।
(Vo is waqt school me ho sakti hai.)
She can be in school right now./
She could be in school right now./
She may be in school right now./
She might be in school right now./
ये बहुत रिस्की हो सकता था, भगवान का शुक्र है हम नहीं गये।
(Ye bahut risky ho sakta tha, bhagwan ka shukra hai hum nahi gaye.)
It could have been very risky; thank God, we didn’t go. /
It may have been very risky; thank God, we didn’t go. /
It might have been very risky; thank God, we didn’t go.
देखिए, नीचे कुछ लिखा है इससे आपको May and Might के Use को समझने में आसानी होगी। इसे किसी भी हाल में रटना होगा –
कर सकता है (Kar sakta hai) –
Ability – Can
Request – Can, Could, May
Otherwise – Can, Could, May, Might
कर सकता था (Kar sakta tha) –
Ability – Could
Otherwise – Could have, May have, Might have
कर सका / कर पाया / कर पाता (Kar saka / Kar paya / Kar pata) – Could
हो सकता है (Ho sakta hai) / किया जा सकता है (Kiya ja sakta hai) – Can/Could/May/Might + be
हो सकता था (Ho sakta tha) / किया जा सकता था (Kiya ja sakta tha) – Could/May/Might + have been
पास हो सकता है (Paas ho sakta hai) – Can/Could/May/Might + have
पास हो सकता था (Paas ho sakta tha) – Could/May/Might + have had
करना पड़ सकता है (Karna pad sakta hai) – Can/Could/May/Might + have to
करना पड़ सकता था (Karna pad sakta tha) / करना पड़ जाता (Karna pad jata) – Can/Could/May/Might + have had to
